bitter cold

John celebrated his 31st(!) birthday two weekends ago and we packed it full of upstate goodies that have been on our to-do list!  Friday night after work we headed up to West Mountain for a fun night of tubing.  They typically have night skiing, but they were also having a winter celebration filled with fireworks, bands and a light show.  We didn't stay for the main event as the temperature was dropping fast.  So we headed back towards town, but picked up a 9 Miles East pizza!  It was such a good choice and I'm glad to know that they deliver.  So we hunkered down and enjoyed our pizza and wine while watching The Quiet Man.

Since the temperature dropped so low that weekend, we made a short visit to the state park Saturday just to get out of the apartment before grabbing a showing of Hail Caesar!  I knew well before going to the movie that I would not like it at all.  Little did John know, I took a $12.50 nap in a recliner.

Sunday, we headed down to Howe Caverns as we knew that this was something we could do "outdoors," but we would be at a warmer temperature during our tour.  The cave stays at around 50 degrees so it was still a tad chilly, but I had toured a cave once in Doolin, Ireland when I studied abroad, and John had been to HC previously so we knew a bit of what to expect.  Afterwards we caught a yummy lunch at Brown's Brewery in Troy.  I'll have to try their other location as we explore the Capital District more.  We then headed back home for some lounging and meal prep for our Valentine's Day dinner.  This year we decided to make sushi at home!  It wasn't actually too difficult and it was fun seeing all the ingredients we prepared make it (or not make it) into our sushi rolls.  John's rolls were especially funny because they were quite thin or split.  Hehe!  Needless to say I think we'll try it again in the future!

We wrapped up the weekend with some skiing on Monday as it warmed up quite a bit.  We didn't stay for too long; I was still trying to keep an eye on my back pain, but it was good to get out on the slopes.  John had a lovely one day early Happy Birthday dinner as he had to work his actual birthday, but we of course celebrated with cake and Champagne!  Here's to a great 31 John!

north face

Coat:  The North Face (similar here) |  Pants:  The North Face (I wear a pair of leggings and socks underneath for extra warmth)  |  Gloves:  The North Face  |  Helmet:  Anon  |  Goggles:  Smith  |  Clava:  similar here  |  Turtleneck:  TJ Maxx (similar here)  |  Boots/Skis/Poles:  Second Hand (but love these and these)

I've only been out on the slopes three times this late winter season, but I've been making good use out of my ski gear since purchasing the previous year.  I've linked everything above, but I want to express to you that my gloves and clava are key on cold days.  The gloves have wrist straps that if I have to blow my nose or adjust my goggles I can take them off on the lift with ease and not worry about losing them to the mountain below.  Yes, something simple and weird, but if you had them then it's definitely a plus!  The clava is also my go-to because it acts as my hat, but also covers my mouth and nose if need be without having to deal with separate accessories to adjust and fix each time you mess with one or the other.  Usually I'm just good with covering my chin and that keeps me warm, but every now and then I need to cover up when it's freezing windy out.  As you can see I'm in full black.  I'm not very ballsy when it comes to ski gear, but I love seeing what everyone else wears, including the bright colors and prints.  I have a little of an itch to try bright colors or prints, but then I just gravitate toward the black gear.  Perhaps when I get a bit more use out of this I'll switch it up (or catch a good sale)!

I have received several great gifts that I have added to my winter wardrobe as well as my jewelry collection this past Christmas!  I wanted to create a fun blog post that showcases the new additions as well as compliments my current items.

It's been a short week, but a busy one.  Work has been insane and has left me with little to no time to focus on the blog, even with John at work on his shift schedule.  Usually I get so much done this week, but it doesn't seem like that will end up happening!  I'm going to need to carve out some time this weekend to focus on a few thing I'd like to work on for upcoming posts.  I'm also hoping to fit in at least one ski day as well dependent on weather {crosses fingers}.

Galentine's Day

Tonight I hosted my first Galentine's Day party!  Yes, it wasn't February 13th, but John and I are in for a busy holiday weekend including President's Day, his 31st birthday as well as Valentine's Day, so I thought I'd schedule it early.  It included just a few close friends for a casual evening after work!  I made a yummy butternut squash risotto and brussel sprout salad.  It was accompanied by a cheese and meat platter as well as bountiful desserts and candies.  There was of course some delicious cocktails and mocktails!  I'd say the party was a success! ;)

Happy Winedown Wednesday!

It was a quiet month, but here's the look back at the January outfits!

John and I made a yummy dinner tonight (see below for recipe) and we paired it with a Napa Chardonnay.   It was a smooth blend that complimented the spicy and tangy dish.  It even had a few hints of ginger in it as well so it worked well and ended with a little zing!  Happy Winedown!
1 (6-ounce) tuna fillet (sushi or sashimi quality)
1 tablespoon Sriracha
1 tablespoon sesame oil
1 garlic clove, minced
2 or 3 scallions, white and tender green parts only, thinly sliced
1 teaspoon ginger, minced
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
1 bag of coleslaw
4 teaspoon of Sriracha
4 tablespoon mayo
4 tablespoon fresh cilantro, chopped
salt to taste
Cut the raw tuna in tiny cubes. In a medium bowl combine tuna, Sriracha, sesame oil, garlic, scallions, ginger, and toasted sesame seeds. Mix well. Serve inside taco shells.
In a large bowl combine green cabbage, purple cabbage, cilantro, mayo, Sriracha. Toss and mix well. Taste to see if you need more Sriracha or mayo.

With Valentine's Day right around the corner, I've linked a few fun and different gifts that your significant other may come across!  I know there are the typical sexy lingerie or roses and chocolates, but why not have something fun and practical too because every day should be Valentine's Day with your person! *kiss-kiss*
